This subject covers all the narrative elements of Illustration. It addresses the fundamentals of narrative, such as semiotics and rhetoric of storytelling, the construction of story elements, revision of universal story structures, and script characteristics. It also explores the application of these parameters in graphic representation, analyzing different structures of the creative process, and the applied techniques and methodologies.

This subject provides a comprehensive understanding of illustration as a reflection and artistic expression of a social and temporal context. It analyzes its relationship with changes and social dynamics, where it is perceived as a means of communication, persuasion, and propaganda linked to the history of graphic advertising from its origins in the 19th century to the present. Additionally, the subject offers students insight into the history of Illustration as a source of inspiration, documentation, and references, examining iconic and rhetorical aspects in graphic creations.

Through a practical workshop format guided by illustration professionals, various analogue techniques and artistic styles for creating illustrations are explored through physical practice. Tools such as collage, dry and wet techniques, markers, etc., are used, with subsequent application to projects such as illustrated books for adult or children audiences and illustrations for advertising or journalism purposes.

Anatomical drawing is fundamental in constructing story elements. Therefore, this subject provides a thorough understanding of the human figure, both in morphology and motility. This knowledge is complemented by the development of psychological aspects of characters related to their physical appearance.

Through a practical workshop format guided by illustration professionals, different digital techniques and artistic resources provided by technological programs are explored for creating illustrations. Tools such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Fresco, Procreate, etc., are used to generate images that can be applied to projects such as illustrated books for adult or children audiences or illustrations for advertising or journalism purposes.

A significant portion of the program is dedicated to the necessary aspects of editing and audiovisual post-production related to illustration, as it is one of the rapidly growing emerging markets. This subject introduces students to the analysis of movement and the style of animated characters, followed by their application with 2D and 3D modeling techniques.

Historically, illustration has been linked to editorial development, both to support written texts and to create printed narratives primarily composed of images. In this regard, the subject explores the conceptual aspects of press illustration and delves into the complexity of creating illustrated books for adult or children audiences.

This subject relates illustration to its applications in the field of visual communication and advertising. It addresses the specificity of graphic advertising and its contribution to areas such as packaging, digital products, or its relationship with other design spaces such as interior design or textile illustration.

This subject involves the student’s completion of an original and individual work that integrates and reflects the knowledge acquired throughout the Master’s program.

You will develop personal skills, emotional management, project planning, budget management, report writing, teamwork, and presentation defense and argumentation.

FAQs

Illustration is a growing field. Companies need professionals capable of formulating new ideas and rethinking products, services, and experiences through design.

Illustration has multiple applications, ranging from products to narratives, encompassing visual and audiovisual communication that occupies all spaces around us, from print media to digital advertising.

Moreover, studios, publishers, and art spaces are actively seeking to incorporate this profile and collaborate with illustrators who can synthesize and translate ideas into visual language.

The Master’s Degree lasts for 1 year, from October to July, comprising 60 ECTS credits.

The master’s degree is recommended for creative graduates with a graphic or project component and diverse backgrounds (ranging from generalist design degrees, product design degrees, fashion degrees, interior design degrees, animation degrees, video game degrees, digital art degrees, interactive product degrees, architecture degrees, fine arts degrees, or information science degrees with a focus on audiovisual communication or advertising). It is also directed at graduates from non-creative professions working in creative environments who desire comprehensive and versatile training beyond just learning professional technical tools.

Now is the time to do it. Private companies and public organizations increasingly rely on the visual strategies that illustration provides to present their proposals and create connections with their diverse audiences.

UDIT is a leading center for design and technology in Madrid. Additionally, the university is a pioneer in launching new official degrees, such as the Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual Design and Illustration.
