WHY

The video game industry is the world’s highest-grossing entertainment industry, far ahead of cinema, theatre and music.

For two weeks, attendees will be introduced to the world of video game design and development, and will learn the artistic and technological foundations on which this industry is based.

Methodology and techniques

BASIC LEVEL

The contents of the VideoGame Camp are divided into three main blocks:

  • ART
  1. Introduction – Brainstorming
  2. Graphical references – Compilation of graphical references. Introduction to the history of video games
  3. Concept Art – shaping an idea through drawing
  • DESIGN AND PRODUCTION
  1. Design – fundamentals of creativity and teamwork. Creation of the GDD (Design Document). Storyboarding
  2. Project planning – How to turn an idea into a video game
  3. Testing – techniques for detecting errors in a video game.
  • PROGRAMMING
  1. Starting a project – Development tools: Construct 2. Saving and sharing projects.
  2. Introduction to the programming tool – Tile background. Adding a layer. Adding the input objects (player, monster, bullet, explosion…).
  3. Adding behaviours – Bullet movement. Scroll to. Limit to stage (bound). Destroy on exiting the stage (destroyoutside). Fade. Other advanced behaviours
  4. Adding functionality to the game – Getting the player to shoot. The explosion effect. Making the monsters a little smarter.
  5. Keeping score – Scores, lives, etc.
  6. Finishing touches – Sound and music.
  7. Publish the game – Save and Load. Export for different platforms

ADVANCED LEVEL

The contents of the VideoGame Camp are divided into three main blocks:

  • ART & DESIGN
  1. Game design – Choice of theme. Main functions. Controller design. Usability and intuitive interface. Main character. Enemies. Background design. Power Ups design. Creating levels
  2. Pre-production and Concept Art – Techniques to stimulate creativity. Traditional techniques: illustration, photography, collage, modelling. Digital techniques: 2D and 3D illustration. Graphical representation of three-dimensional models. Lighting
  3. Character creation – Character types. Player character, non-player characters, enemies. Character characteristics: anatomy, clothing, hairstyle and accessories. The facial and corporal expression of the characters.
  4. Spatial organisation: plans, models and 3D reconstructions – Natural spaces: types of landscapes and their constituent elements. Buildings and living spaces. Spatial organisation: plans, models and 3D reconstructions.
  5. Creation of props – Types of props. Characterisation of characters and settings through props. Location and arrangement in the scene. Coherence with characters and environments.
  6. Tools for visual creation and animation: Digital Painting via Adobe Photoshop 2D Animation via Spine
  • PROGRAMMING
  1. Introduction to the programming tool – UNITY AND C#
  2. Adding objects – scene creation. Objects of the game. The player at the centre. Enemies. Bullets. Explosions
  3. Adding behaviours (scripts) – How to add components. Delimitation of the play area. Lighting control. Camera control. Modification of materials. Animations.
  4. Adding functionalities to the game – Giving the player skills. Creation of special effects. Generation of enemies or other intelligent objects. Scores and lives.
  5. Finishing touches – Sound and Music. Save and Load. Export for different platforms
