Curriculum

The curriculum of the Master’s Degree in Product Design consists of 60 ECTS credits and lasts for one year.

It has been designed taking into account the voices of the most experienced professionals in the industry and higher education to give it a strong professional focus.

Check the Teaching Guides of the Master’s Degree in Product Design.

  • Design Methodology – 3 ECTS – 1st semester. Principles of the design process and understanding the techniques that allow for analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating the adequacy of the results obtained based on functional, aesthetic, manufacturing, economic, and commercial requirements, without neglecting environmental aspects.
  • History and Context of Design – 3 ECTS – 1st semester. The social, historical, and technological context must be taken into account. Knowledge of the main socio-cultural, artistic, and philosophical movements contributes to understanding the environment in which the designer’s work takes place.
  • Creativity, Drawing, and Modeling – 3 ECTS – 1st semester. Advanced concepts and techniques of drawing and modeling for the development of creative ideas. Traditional drawing and spatial modeling techniques will be covered, as well as an introduction to digital 3D modeling.
  • Creative Project Seminar – 6 ECTS – 1st semester. Based on the complex techniques and concepts acquired in the theoretical-practical subjects, a creative project will be developed.

  • Design and Society. Understanding the advanced foundations of sociology to comprehend how design and technology interact with society. Integrating sociological theory and tools from social sciences into the interpretation and understanding of design and its processes, acting as an integrative axis for the rest of the knowledge.
  • User Experience-Based Design. Learning and applying techniques for complex analysis that allow for structuring design decisions with data provided by users themselves, enhancing the opportunities for successful completion of the process.
  • Sustainable Materials and Processes. Knowledge of materials is essential for the successful completion of any design project. Based on their particular characteristics, the most suitable materials must be selected in each case considering their manufacturing possibilities, physical and aesthetic characteristics, availability, and environmental behavior throughout their life cycle.
  • Social and Sustainable Project. Developing a project that includes the main analyzed concepts, with a special emphasis on integrating the socio-economic context and user experience into the project. This process explicitly includes environmental variables, particularly circular use of generated waste and energy intensity.

  • Digital Manufacturing Techniques. Studying the different methods used for rapid prototyping and product manufacturing to gain sufficient knowledge of the machine tools used for digital manufacturing (CNC machining, additive manufacturing, laser cutting and welding, 3D scanning) and the related software.
  • Robotics and Electronics. Building upon a comprehension of basic electronic concepts, particularly in regard to sensors and signal processing, their application to automation and robotics will be studied. These techniques are applicable to both incorporating into the designed products and the construction systems used in mass production.
  • Interactive Prototyping Development. Understanding the methods used to create physical models for analyzing design results. In the initial phase, low-cost Alpha models are created using materials that are not final but allow for evaluating volumetric results from a perceptual or ergonomic perspective. Beta models are then created to validate functional aspects, employing materials and techniques similar to the final ones.

  • External Internships. Undertaking professional internships in sector companies that provide valuable training experience for the student.

  • Business Strategy and Communication. Analyzing and delving into the concept of entrepreneurship for business development. This includes a critical analysis of the competencies required for business development and introducing the methodology for developing a business plan supported by marketing concepts and market analysis. Communication techniques in project development are also included in this context.
  • Economic Viability and Legislation. Providing students with the essential legal knowledge for professional practice, without neglecting the ethical aspects that govern proper performance. Additionally, studying economic aspects for economic analysis that guarantees the viability and success of projects.
  • Web Design and Programming. Mastering advanced programming languages used in web environment design, either for functional needs or as interfaces for interaction with users and other systems, such as data visualization and retrieval. Priority will be given to object-oriented languages for their user-friendly simplicity.

  • Master’s Thesis. Creating design project models using both traditional techniques (clay) and different digital techniques (stereolithography, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, etc.), including models for the evaluation of automation or visualization systems. This subject involves the completion of an original and individual project by the student, integrating and reflecting the knowledge acquired throughout the Master’s program.
