Objetives:

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 80% of the disease burden as well as for the majority of premature deaths in the EU, diminishing the citizens’ quality of life, life expectancy, and increasing the financial burden (from those affected to the health system). During the last 3 decades, environmental stressors have been addressed through numerous studies, which have raised concerns about the detrimental effects of the environment on human health. The most evaluated environmental stressors are air temperature, particulate and gaseous air pollutants, urban noise, food pollutants, and radiation. By the end of 2022, air pollution was reported to be responsible for an excess mortality of 311.000 people per year in the EU-27, driving not only premature deaths but also an increased risk of vascular diseases such as ischemic heart disease, stroke, and other non-communicable non-vascular diseases like chronic respiratory diseases or depression. Some newly considered stressors, such as electromagnetic fields and light exposure, are also susceptible to affecting human health (e.g.: ocular and dermatological NCD diseases). ENACT aims at building a pathway to generate clinical, technological and economic short & long-term impact targeting local and regional stakeholders and create impact by: Developing a state-of-the-art environmental risk score and analyzer driven framework and platform to predict, monitor and prevent the exposomic risk of acute and chronic health conditions of chronic vascular and non-vascular NCDs. This new exposomic risk score and analyzer will support (a) patients, (b) health professionals/hospitals, and (c) policy makers; aiming at reducing the human and financial burden of NCD, considering potential individual vulnerability factors, and reinforcing both a clinical and a policy implementation that enables prevention and disease management for higher quality of life.

Practical applications:

ENACT aimed at improving public health outcomes by addressing environmental stressors.

Environmental Risk Assessment Tools: ENACT is developing a state-of-the-art environmental risk score and Analyzer platform.

  • Predict, monitor, and prevent the exposomic risk (i.e., cumulative environmental exposures) for non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
  • Help identify individuals and populations at higher risk due to environmental factors like air pollution, noise, and food contaminants

Personalized Health Risk Prediction: The project aims to translate population-level environmental risk data into individual-level predictions. And forecast the likelihood of developing preclinical, asymptomatic stages NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases, respiratory conditions, skin problems, ocular affections, and mental health disorders

Support for Health Policy and Urban Planning: ENACT’s findings and tools can be used by:

  • Local and regional governments to design healthier urban environments.
  • Healthcare systems to allocate resources more effectively based on environmental risk profiles.
  • Policy makers to implement regulations that mitigate environmental health risks

Digital Health and AI Integration: The project integrates AI and digital technologies to:

  • Enhance data analysis and prediction accuracy.
  • Support real-time monitoring of environmental exposures and health outcomes

Public Awareness and Preventive Interventions: ENACT also focuses on:

  • Educating the public about environmental health risks.
  • Promoting active interventions such as lifestyle changes or community-level initiatives to reduce exposure and improve well-being

Metodology:

  • Exposomic Data Integration
  • Retrospective and Prospective a data analysis
  • Design of measurement devices for areas and individuals
  • AI-Driven Risk Modeling
  • Clinical and Environmental Data Fusion
  • Real-World Implementation and Validation. Pilots in Spain, Belgium, Italy, Ireland
  • Feedback Loops and Policy Integration

Innovation:

  • Exposomic Risk Modeling
  • Personalized Health Forecasting
  • AI and Digital Health Integration
  • Open-Source and Interoperable Tools
  • Web3 and Edge Computing

CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIETY AND SCIENCE.

  • Public Health Impact: By identifying environmental drivers of disease, ENACT supports preventive healthcare strategies and helps reduce the burden of NCDs, which account for 80% of the disease burden in the EU
  • Policy and Urban Planning Support: The tools and insights from ENACT can guide evidence-based policymaking, especially in urban planning, environmental regulation, and healthcare resource allocation
  • Climate and Biodiversity Synergies: ENACT aligns with EU goals on climate action and biodiversity, contributing to healthier ecosystems and more resilient communities
  • Digital and Green Transitions: The project supports the EU’s digital and green transitions by integrating environmental health into digital innovation strategies

Primer kickoff Proyecto ENACT que tuvo lugar el 24 de enero de 2023
